EPL Week 3 Predictions

Posted by Biggy and Chamo on August 21, 2009  •  Comments

Another week is upon us already (you have to enjoy the compacted schedule, 38 games in 36 weeks! Thank you World Cup!), and there are many interesting match-ups to be seen. United will attempt to rebound after the devastating loss to Burnley, while Liverpool will host Aston Villa as the Villans try to find their feet again. Both Biggy and Chamo weigh in on the ties after the jump.

Biggy:

Arsenal 3:0 Portsmouth – Don't be surprised if this score line is much higher. Arsenal has already shown enormous firepower and the gulf in class here will be evident. Cesc, van Persie and Eduardo each grab goals as Arsenal continues its blistering pace to the top of the table.

Birmingham 1:1 Stoke – The new boys jump out early, but a Delap throw leads to an own goal that gets Stoke a draw on the road. Certainly not the most aesthetically pleasing game, but a well fought draw for each team.

Hull City 2:0 Bolton – Hull regains its form at home behind a Geovanni strike and a late addition for wundersub Jozy Altidore. Important points for a team that has already faltered against another league straggler.

Man City 5:1 Wolves – A lovely welcome to the Middle East(lands) from Man City as they come out offensive, score early and often. City looks to replace Liverpool in the top four, and impressive results at home will help do that. Too bad this will be impressive based on sheer goal tally and not the opponent they whack.

Sunderland 1:0 Blackburn – Sunderland recovers from the midweek tie with Chelsea to get max points behind a Bent strike, as he continues to impress.

Wigan 1:1 Man United – Certainly United is shaking after losing to new boys Burnley, and the streak of shakiness continues at Wigan, where a late goal from Rooney saves them more embarrassment and puts Sir Alex in an odd position, under siege from the fans. Wigan defends their home pitch fiercely after an unexpected loss midweek to Wolves.

West Ham 3:3 Tottenham – The match of the week, as two teams who are both firing on all cylinders square off in an offensive battle, defense be damned. The Hammers streak to an early lead, but cough it up late to a Defoe equalizer that keeps Tottenham as the early season dark horse alive.

Burnley 1:2 Everton – Everton recovers from a woeful start as Tim Howard eats two of his defenders in practice, literally. After spitting them out, this gifted offensive team remembers how to mark on set pieces and gets it done the hard way at Burnley.

Fulham 1:1 Chelsea – In a matchup of Biggy vs Chamo, no one comes out ahead, except for the fans. Drogs scores early, but a brilliant performance by Fulham gets them a goal for Johnson off a tap in set up by Dempsey. Which leaves all of us USMNT fans to scratch our heads and wonder where he was for the trip to Azteca.

Liverpool 1:2 Aston Villa – Liverpool's recklessness in the midfield catches up with them as they go a man down with twenty left. Villa presses and gets a winner with five to go, crushing the souls of those at the Merseyside, and leaving them to wonder what this year really holds.

Chamo:

Arsenal 3:1 Portsmouth - Portsmouth continue to struggle despite flying out of the gates to score their first goal of this Premiership term, and flail about the pitch attempting to keep up with a flowing Arsenal attack. Eduardo scores again late to put this one past Pompey, who prop up the bottom of the table.

Birmingham 2:0 Stoke - They were lucky midweek against Portsmouth, but there will be no question about Birmingham's domination this week as they get the home victory over Stoke. McFadden scores before the half, and is supported by a 75th minute Ferguson strike that opens his Premier League account.

Hull City 2:1 Bolton - An exciting and incredibly scrappy game will see Hull get the three points as Bolton only manage to pull one back in stoppage time against the Tigers. Jozy makes his Premier League debut as a substitute, but fails to score a sitter that would have sealed the game.

Manchester City 3:1 Wolves - Another victory for City, but another rather unconvincing defensive performance again highlights their rather Real Madrid-like purchases this summer may not in fact bring them all the glory they expect.

Sunderland 1:1 Blackburn - The first tie of the Premiership season sees Blackburn scrape a point out of the offensively-potent Black Cats. Bent continues his scoring streak, but fails to get the win when Franco di Santo comes on to head in Blackburn's first point of the season.

Wigan 1:2 Manchester United - In need of a result, Rooney manages to save United's blushes with an 82nd minute winner after Wigan match United stride for stride until the final 10 minutes. With Ferdninand now out for a month, and Johnny Evans not 100%, United's defense struggles with the pace of the Wigan front line. Owen relegated to the bench again, puts in another unsavory performance, failing to win any United doubters....again.

West Ham 2:3 Tottenham - A great match up that could see lots of goals as Spurs' strike-force puts three past Rob Green while Carlton Cole manages a brace, but with the lack of a strike partner, fails to get enough service for a third.

Burnley 0:2 Everton - Everton seemed revived midweek against Sigma Olomouc, and Burnley will be attempting to recover from their hangovers after the wonder-performance against United. I can't see this going any way but in Everton's favor, with a strike from Saha early to set the tone, and young James Vaughan finishing it off in the 80th.

Fulham 1:4 Chelsea - You can try to make the argument that Fulham is home, but how is that relevant when you're a matter of blocks from the Bridge. Chelsea have had a slow start in their last two matches, but have improved by the end of each. Expect a slow start, followed by a mad rush of goals from Chelsea, with Anelka and Drogba scoring once each, complemented by Lamps and a late poke in from none other than Andriy Shevchenko to send the Blues fans into raptures.

Liverpool 2:1 Aston Villa - Villa have been dismal, and nothing will change on Monday for this one. Torres and Gerrard give Liverpool a comfortable win despite the score line, as the Reds squander at least a dozen chances to put this game beyond a doubt.
